Elmscan 5 Compact Driver Windows 8
Arrived quickly and as expected. Met my needs immediately, followed the simple instructions and away I go. It provided a lot of data, but my primary purchase was for reading the codes, reset, and use for troubleshooting. Did see a slight delay in reporting of information, but it was well less than a second, and if I didn't explicitly look for the delay, I would not have seen it. The default feature set is much more than I need right now, but as a former mechanic, I can see the value of this device along with more advanced software for some of the most complex issues.
The Ford Enhanced Add-on adds hundreds of parameters, which are listed below.
The only thing I had to do was run the program as Administrator (Windows 8), to get it to connect. (Right click on the shortcut and choose 'Run as Administrator'. I work as a professional ASE certified mechanic and I bought this for home use on my new netbook that uses Windows 7 starter.
Installation was easy, but simply plugging the scanner into the laptop while connected to the internet got better results because windows automatically finds the best drivers. When you first try to connect i found it easiest to click auto-detect to make sure the pc can communicate to the scanner. Then click connect and it finds the correct protocol to use. Reading and clearing codes was very easy. To view all the PIDS you have to manually set it to monitor all of them or you only get a few. However when you do this the PID update rate gets very very slow and is almost useless, I was able to rev the engine up and let it come back down to idle and the scanner never updated in time to pick up the RPM change. If you deselect all PID's and select only RPM, it will update almost instantly so the update rate depends on the car AND how much data you are trying to pull all at once.
When selecting 5 or less PID's the update rate is acceptable I've tried this product on a 2006 Honda Ridgeline and a 1996 Ford Escort, the escort appeared to have faster data refresh rates, but was still too slow when all PID's were selected Overall this product is worth the low cost if you're trying to check and clear codes, and if you know what you're doing you can do SOME diagnostics with this, to do any real diagnosis you need a much much faster scan tool capable of monitoring all PID's as fast as the car will update them. OBDWiz was the best software I tried for this scanner, stick with and check for updates within the program to auto update to the newest version and gain some more power Also the best way to install the software onto a netbook is to copy the CD onto another computer and transfer it to the netbook. Or create an ISO image of the CD using daemon tools and mount it in a virtual drive. (Right click on the shortcut and choose 'Run as Administrator'. I've had this thing for years and I've only used it once to track down an intermittent CEL for a misfire that wouldn't save a code in a 2001 Cavalier. I really ought to use it more. The software while clunky was easy to use and the whole experience of plugging my laptop into a car was enjoyable because I felt like I was really doing next level mechanics.
Back when I took auto shop in high school the only electronic equipment they had was a Sun Engine Analyzer which took up a whole bay wall. Every engine on a test stand they had was carbureted. So I never really learned until I had this device, a laptop, and the internet to look up how to get the most out of the diagnosis. But now.it's a whole new ballgame. I'm not paying a Chevy dealer $700 to figure out what's wrong with a $400 car when I have this cable set and can do it myself! Compatibility claims much exaggerated, specifically OBD wiz setup/ software' I had to buy another, which enabled me to connect to OBD2 GMC Safari I ordered it last year, fooled around, never got around to it until just recently, so it's partly/mostly my own fault, too late to return.
The part that works, seems to work pretty good, the delivered-to-the-door part worked pretty good, as scheduled. I was eventually able to accomplish what I wanted, but, it ended up costing X2 plus, to do so.
UPDATE, Couple seasons later, These folks saw my review, went to considerable effort to make me satisfied, which they did. I feel I should point that out, as, that counts. My 2004 Dodge Ram Truck's check engine light would come on intermittently; I kept going to a local auto parts store and plugging in their code reader and it would show no code and the light would go out. I figured what the heck, I'll Give this a try. TOTAL SCORE!!
This thing works great, you can run diagnostics, clear the history and troubleshoot some pretty annoying problems. Well my check engine light came on and I read the code; the Dodge Store wanted to charge me about $500 to diagnose and fix the problem. I diagnosed it myself, went on you-tube and learned how to change out an EGR valve, and picked up the part at a local auto parts store with a 20% off coupon, I fixed the thing in 1/2 hour and the parts were $33. This is the best gadget in my toolbox!
It even tells you if you will pass smog and is configurable for different states emission standards. It hooked right up to my Toshiba laptop and linked up to the truck computer--super simple--Do not hesitate to get one of these!!! I was completely shocked. I bought this product just for the elm cable but I decided to gove the software a try. I half expected ot to be full of viruses and very cheap. However it was not.
It is an incredible piece of software for a generic OBD II scan tool. It has a lot of features that I would not expect for the price. I was impressed with the data logging capability and the customizable aspects of data readouts. I have been an automotive professional for over 17 years and have used all types scan tools from generic to manufacturer specific.
Even with this experience I was really impressed by this software. It is something I would have expected to cost a lot more. This is not a professional scan tool (obviously) but for your OBD II needs anf for the price, it is amazing! This is one of the best purchases I have ever made and I have already recommended it to many other people. I've seen thousand dollar scanners do similar to what this software does.
You can clear 'Check Engine Light' code if like, but I would not until I wrote down the description and code. An example on a Chevrolet, say 2001 3.1 Liter engine Malibu Standard model (Base). The female connector is somewhere usually above the right knee or calf area underneath the dash. Say you get a common performance code like P0171. With a hand-held scanner it will only give you this number, but what does that number mean. You'll need a much more detailed software such as the one shown here, but it too is limited, but it can do much more than any of those hand-held code readers.
P0171 is a 'vacuum' leak or faulty vacuum device such as PCV, which cannot be detected unless you know how to check manually or with a scanner. P0171 will most definitely effect the performance of an engine. If PCV is faulty the engine will have a difficult time idling altogether, but you would not know that if you did not have a scanner or knew how to check manually. This 'isn't' a code reader, it's a 'programmed' software that your buying 'rights' to use in lieu of buying one of those several thousand dollar scopes. What good is an oscilloscope if you can't read these graphs to tell you what your looking.
This software will do anything a DIY project 'wrench jockey' needs, but remember don't clear these codes until you are sure you have your area pinpointed,and/or you'll have to wait until the PCM cycles through, and that could be tomorrow or several hundreds miles later. Always remember my motto - 'When dealing with moving parts keep your clothes and hair tucked away, and those precious hands out from around unfamilar moving parts, pulleys especially have no mercy.' Yes, if you have a laptop computer I would recommend this product Great gift for a teenager starting to learn to take care of his/her vehicle.
Works exactly as proclaimed right out of the box. You can make few bucks on side with others once comfortable with these readings and graphs.
Average costs ten or more years ago was around $75.00 for 'analysis report', no repairs, just a print out. Today, don't be surprised you don't don't spend $125.00 or more, plus now most established shops will not allow you too leave with an unsafe or emissions issued vehicle. You either get it fixed or sign a waiver, and they will not clear out these codes would be my best guess. Don't believe me then go to a well known named parts house; I bet they too 'will not' clear vehicle codes out.
New law in effect. Go ahead purchase before these scanners become unavailable to general public. Won't be long devices and certain tools used for vehicles are not going be available for sale to the general public without a license either. I will proof my theory - Go to your local parts house and ask for a can of R-12 Freon for say 1994 model car. I'm willing to wager they will not sale to you without a license.
EPA is cracking down on availability of certain automotive tools being sold to the public. You want a DIY device at a reasonable priced than better get one while you still can.
I love the ElmScan 5 compact OBD-II that I purchased a few weeks ago. The technical support is, however non existent! I sent 3 emails asking for help when I couldn't connect to car and never received a thing. That is understandable considering the low cost of this unit, but I wish they wouldn't pretend to offer tech support. It took me a couple of weeks to figure out why my ElmScan would not work. I finally figured out that the OBD socket fuse on my Toyota Corolla was blown and that is the reason the ElmScan would not connect. As soon as I replaced the fuse, the unit connected and gave me 2 codes which I evaluated and then turned the codes off.
They have stayed off for at least a week. If you plan on using a PC with USB port to hook up your scanner, make sure that the FTDI driver is loaded and working.
